Also, since that air inlet hose and mounting attachment to the core support is original, I will want it in my Volga. Is this a common part or is it difficult to find? Can anyone help me locate one?

Mainly it were just usual 3102s for transportation of employees!
Special cars (for support of important persons) have more powerful engines with automatic transmission.
Selector was look like an usual lever of mechanical transmission.
Those models were named GAZ-31011 (V8 4,2L 160Hp) and GAZ-31013 (V8 5,5L 190Hp engine from GAZ-13).
It were not serial cars. It were made in special workshops of GAZ.

Latest (2000's) GAZ-3102s were equipped with japanese engine V6 5vz-fe

I think it's all what i know about those cars. Maybe someone else has anything more to say here.

Для компенсации веса двигателя V8 и для лучшего сцепления с дорогой задней оси, в багажнике лежала 100кг металлическая плита. Для ее удержания были сделаны специальные крепления. бензобак у таких машин был за спинкой заднего сиденья. на машинах после 2000 года, бензобак стал находится под днищем багажного отделения и плита была убрана. Японский двигатель V6 был не сильно тяжелее родного двигателя.

Для КГБ были еще версии с двигателями Rover (он же buick) и с двигателями Форд.

For compensation of weight of the V8 engine and for the best coupling from expensive back axis, in a luggage carrier the metal plate lay 100кг. For its deduction special fastenings were made. such cars had a fuel tank behind a back of a back seat. by cars after 2000, the fuel tank became is under the bottom of a luggage compartment and the plate was cleaned. The Japanese V6 engine was not strongly more hard than the native engine.

For KGB there were still versions with Rover engines (it is buick) and with engines Ford.

I attempted to translate and understand the previous discussions but was only able to make sense of a part of it. I could comment but will not do so because I don't fully understand what was said. In general it sounded to me like there was a slight difference in opinion regarding the quality of Russian cars, Volga in particular. But whichever. I will leave it up to you to continue such discussion.

Thank you for all of the deedback thus far regarding the history of the 3102 and the cold air intake. Next I will continue with the trip report.

RUSSIA TRIP REPORT - PART III

The following day was another important day because this would be the beginning of a three day trip that took me to Vladimir and to Nizhny Novgorod. In Vladimir I would meet the previous owners of my 3102 and in Nizhny I was to tour the GAZ museum and shop for parts at the outdoor market. There would be an additional surprise component to this trip, but I am getting ahead of myself again.

We left for Vladimir about mid-day. Vadim picked me up and we headed East out of Moscow. It was a rainy day and I was glad that Vadim was at the wheel to navigate through the insane Moscow traffic. As usual I fell asleep in the backseat along the way. I am not sure that I ever fully adjusted to being on Russian time, really. That or it could have been the weather, but I digress.

I checked in with the previous owners once we approached Vladimir. We met at a roadside fuel station. I recognized it instantly from the pictures that my contact in Moscow had sent me when he went to preview the car in late 2009. We exited Vadim's vehicle and I met the previous owners for the first time. There was Victor, his son Ivan and his other son Michael. Meeting them was one of life's pleasures. Victor, despite his age, was quite enthusiastic and energetic. He had lots of questions for me and was eager to get to them straight away. It was raining however so I suggested that we wait until we were in the restaurant. They laughed and agreed. We went on our way but Victor wanted to give me a tour of Vladimir first, so he boarded with us and showed us around his city. He was a bundle of energy and thus pure joy to be around. We saw a couple of churches, military monuments and also the place where he and Ivan had taken pictures together prior to my 3102 leaving Vladimir for the last time. We then went to the restaurant. His sons met us there.

This place that he had selected for us to have dinner was quite nice. It appeared to be in a Russian summer resort type of complex. It was an area of several log cabin style buildings, with wooden walkways interconnecting them so that you never had to step in the mud of the earth that surrounded you. Quite nice. We all sat down and I gave them the gifts that I had brought along with CDs that contained every picture of my Volga that I had ever taken. They seemed appreciative of that, admitting that they all missed the 3102 that they had spent several years with. After everyone placed their order, I pulled out my list of questions and commenced the inquiry. Fortunately Victor and his sons were eager to talk about their beloved Volga and to answer my questions.

I learned a great deal that day. One of the key items that I wanted to know more about was the exact history of my Volga. Contrary to my previous understanding, I learned that Victor was not issued this car by the Soviet Union government in 1983 when the car was new from the factory. Instead, this car was indeed owned by the government and it was driven by a top ranking official of the communist party, mostly for trips back and forth to Moscow. I also learned that my 3102 had a special hole in the upper portion of the driver's side of the firewall where special cabling was run to connect a phone inside the cabin to the battery and antenna. With this phone the aforementioned high ranking offical could call anyone at any time directly from the car. I also learned that my 3102 did not have a blue light in the beginning. I was told that it didn't need one because in those days anyone who saw a 3102 knew exactly what it was and pulled out of the way without the need for the blue light. That is to say that in those days 3102s were government cars exclusively. I had previously understood that they were also taxiis, but I was told that this was not correct. Use of the 3102 for a taxi did not begin until after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

After the first 5 - 7 years as an offical government car, my Volga was retired from offical government service and given to the local government museum. It was used sparingly during this time and only by the museum director. With the fall of communism in the early 90s, Victor was able to purchase the 3102 from the director of the museum.

Во Владимире я хотел встретиться с предыдущим владельцем моей 3102, а в Нижнем я был на экскурсии в музее истории ГАЗ и на рынке запчастей. Там будет дополнительный компонент сюрпризом для этой поездки, но я забегаю вперед снова.

Мы отправились во Владимир примерно в середине дня. Вадим заехал за мной и мы направились на восток от Москвы. Это был дождливый день, и я был рад, что Вадим был за рулем, т.к. перемещаться по Москве с таким безумным движением... Как обычно, я уснул на заднем сиденье. Я не уверен, что я когда-либо полностью приспособлюсь к часовому поясу в России на самом деле. А возможно это было следствием пасмурной погоды. Но я отвлекся.

Я созвонился с предыдущим владельцам, как только мы приблизились к Владимиру. Мы встретились на придорожной АЗС. Я узнал его сразу по фотографиям, что мой контактёр в Москве, послал мне, когда он ездил смотреть автомобиль в конце 2009 года. Мы вышли из автомобиля Вадима, и я встретился с предыдущими владельцами в первый раз. Виктор приехал не один, а с сыновьями Иваном и Михаилом. Встреча с ними была одной из радостей жизни. Виктор, несмотря на свой возраст, был достаточно полон энтузиазма и довольно энергичен. У него было много вопросов для меня, и он очень хотел выложить их все и сразу. Шел дождь и по-этому я предложил подождать, пока мы не выйдем из ресторана. Они рассмеялись и согласились. Мы продолжили наш путь, но Виктор сначала хотел дать мне экскурсию по Владимиру, так он сел с нами и показал нам свой город. Он был как сгусток энергии и светился от радости быть рядом. Мы видели несколько церквей, военных памятников, а также место, где он и Иван фотографировались вместе незадолго до продажи машины. Потом мы пошли в ресторан. Его сыновья встретили нас там.

В это месте, которое он выбрал для нас, ужин был довольно хорош. Он оказался типа русского курортного комплекса. Это была зона из нескольких зданий в бревенчатый стиле, с деревянными мостовыми, что-бы вы случайно не вступили в грязь, которая была вокруг. Мы все сели, и я раздал им подарки, которые я привез вместе с собой. И компакт-диски, содержащих фотографии моей Волги, который я когда-либо сделал. Казалось, они ценят и признают, что многое потеряли, продав Волгу, с которой провели несколько лет. После того как все сделали свои заказы, я достал свой список вопросов и приступили к расследованию. К счастью, Виктор и сыновья его были готовы говорить о своей любимой Волге и отвечать на мои вопросы.

Я многое узнал в тот день. Одним из ключевых пунктов, которые я хотел бы знать больше - это точная история моей Волги. После первых 5 - 7 лет на официальной службе моя Волга был отправлен в отставку и переданы в местный музей. Она эксплуатировалась осторожно и только директором музея. С падением коммунизма в начале 90-х, Виктор смог приобрести 3102 от директора музея.

1. Основная,которая и используется по сегодняшний день высшими руководителями страны - Кавказ

аппаратура данной системы занимала почти весь объем багажного отделения. фотографии ее являются относительно секретными,поэтому найти в сети их можно,но проблематично.

внешний вид аппарата связи в открытом доступе найти не смог. все они на закрытых ресурсах. но выглядит как обычный старый советский телефонный аппарат. точнее трубка от него.
2. вторая по значимости и использованию - Карат. Данная система может использоваться как отдельно,так и совместно с системой Кавказ. в последнее время они дополняют друг друга и используются совместно.

Различные версии данной системы связи также используются в армии.
3.Самая распространенная система связи,более доступная простым чиновникам СССР и России начала 90х годов - Алтай. Скорее всего такая система стояла и на вашей машине. Данная система считается первой системой сотовой связи в нашей стране до GSM и аналогичных систем.

Me too. Thanks for interest to Volga, Jerry. I bought my first Volga in 2001 and use this car brend yet, so I know what is Volga in reality. I would like to know your opinion and opinion of your compatriots about quality of Russian cars, particularly Volga (yours). I'm an auto body repair master and i know about quality of many new vehicles, and I would like to hear what are you thinking about it. I like american cars and if I want exchange Volga in future, I choose Chrysler 300C, but I still leave Volga that to use it when my Chrysler is broke . Nicely to see you in range of the Volga drivers! Sorry for my English .

RUSSIA TRIP REPORT - PART IV

After purchasing the 3102 from the director of the museum, Victor needed to make a few repairs. He noticed that the vehicle suffered considerably from rust. Therefore all fenders, both front and rear, were replaced. Other repairs were made over the next few years. However in 2003 Victor and his two sons began a restoration of the car that would require about five years worth of work. He told me that the floor pans were rusted through and so they replaced those. There were also rust problems in the trunk. Victor repaired those too. He told me that all of this work was completed by hand, as opposed to using a stamped piece of metal from the factory. In my mind this accounts for some of the irregularity that I saw in certain parts of the metal work when I was disassembling my Volga. Generally speaking they appear to have done a pretty good job with their handmade repairs. In late 2007 the car had completed its repairs. Victor gave the car to his youngest son Ivan who drove it for a couple of years. After these two years, they decided to sell it and so technically speaking I bought my Volga from Ivan.

Victor also presented me with a gift of special 3102 hubcaps. From what I understand these hubcaps are rare and valued by 3102 owners. So it was a generous gift. I was grateful. Here is a picture of this hubcap:

Like with previous meetings, the night was over all too soon. Maxim and Luda arrived at the resort to pick me up and to continue the trip to Nizhny Novgorod. Vadim had pressing work issues, so he returned to Moscow. Maxim, Luda and I continued on to Nizhny.

We arrived late that night. Max and Luda would being staying with a friend and I would stay in a hotel. Prior to that however we drove to the garage of a different Max, a guy who lives in Nizhny and who has the nickname of "Mad Max". This particular Max has a specialized 3102 that he uses for drifting. It was a pleasure to meet with "Mad Max" and see his workshop. He has one hell of a garage! He and Oleg are working on installing a larger engine in Oleg's GAZ 24 so it was cool to see the work they had done on that project thus far. We chatted a bit and then went to the hotel.

In the end the experience with this hotel would be awesome! It was an old Soviet style hotel with an attendant woman on each floor, old school room keys and Soviet style furniture in the room. I enjoyed the experience! Max and Oleg left for Oleg's apartment, I took a shower and settled in for the night. Took in a movie on the laptop.

После покупки Волги у директора музея, Виктору пришлось провести несколько ремонтов. Он заметил, что автомобиль сильно пострадал от ржавчины. Поэтому все крылья, передние и задние, были заменены. Последующий ремонт был сделан в течение ближайших нескольких лет. Однако в 2003 году Виктор с сыновьями начали восстановление автомобиля, на который, из-за больших капиталовложений, потребовалось около пяти лет. Он сказал мне, что пол сильно проржавел, и поэтому они заменили его. Были также ржавчины в багажнике. Виктор отремонтировать их тоже. Он сказал мне, что вся эта работа была произведена с использованием кусков листового металла, который лучше, чем просто готовые штампованный металл с завода. На мой взгляд, это объясняет некоторые несоответствия, которые я обнаружил, когда разобрал машину. Честно говоря они, мне кажется, проделали очень хорошую работу. Как и в предыдущих встречах, ночь прошла слишком быстро. Максим и Люда прибыли в курортный отель, чтобы забрать меня и продолжить поездку в Нижний Новгород. Вадиму пришлось вернуться в Москву из-за работы. А Максим, Люда и я поехали в Нижний.

Мы прибыли поздно ночью. Макс и Люда должны были остановиться у другом, и я поселиться в отеле. Перед этим, однако, мы поехали в гараж одного парня, который живет в Нижнем, и кто имеет прозвище "Безумный Макс". Этот особенной Maкс имеет специализированную 3102, которые он использует для дрифтинга. Было очень приятно встретиться с «Безумным Максом» и увидеть его мастерскую. У него есть одна черта из гаража! Он и Олег занимаются установкой более крупного двигателя в ГАЗ-24 Олега, так что это было здорово видеть проделанную работу по этому проекту. Мы поболтали немного, а затем отправились в гостиницу.

That is a difficult question. There are so many things that I do like about Russia that most of the time I don't think about the things that I don't like. I suppose there are some, but this is true of everyone everywhere on the planet. We all have things we don't like about various countries. Hell we all have things that we don't like about our own countries too. It's normal. I'd rather focus on the positive.

Russian roads? Yeah in general they leave a lot to be desired. However the weather conditions that you face in Russia are so much more severe that I can understand why there are many problems with your roads.

Hi Serge,

No problem understanding your English. Glad that you like Volgas too! You ask about an opinion of the quality of Russian cars? Generally speaking these cars do not have a good reputation for quality in America. In fact, most Americans aren't aware that Russia has automotive manufacturing companies like Volga. A few of the people who I have told about my Volga have said "Russia makes cars? Really?" - so you can get an understanding I think from this quote. However most Americans also do not understand the harsh weather conditions that vehicles of all types are subjected to in your part of the world. Personally one of the reasons that I like my Volga is because it is rugged and capable of handling adverse weather conditions. Such conditions would cause a problem for many of the cars that you see in America these days, particularly the import cars, which seem weak to me. All of that plastic and fiberglass and BS. Nah, not for me. I am an old school guy who likes the proven, strong and reliable cars. Hell I like anything that I can rely upon. America has become a "throw away" society. By this I mean that when something begins to get old and looks like it has a little age, generally speaking people throw it away and by a new replacement. I am from the school of thought that says that you refurbish what you have and keep it in good condition. This means that you maintain your equipment, whatever it may be, a car, a tool, whatever, so that this equipment will last a long time. Most Americans cannot be bothered with such maintenance. They prefer the cheap and easy path. I don't want to ridicule this choice, everyone is entitled to their opinion. However it does not work for me. I prefer to maintain what I own, to keep it running and to repair it when it is broken. A Volga is much more suitable to this approach in my mind.

But I digress. Enough philosophy. Let's get back to talking about Volgas!

Это трудный вопрос. Есть так много вещей, которые я люблю о России, что большую часть времени я не думаю о вещах, которые мне не нравятся. Я полагаю, что это верно для всех и повсюду на планете. У всех нас есть вещи, которые нам не нравится в разных странах. А так-же у всех нас есть вещи, которые нам не нравятся о наших собственных странах. Это нормально. Я бы предпочел сосредоточиться на положительных.

Русские дороги? Да в общем они оставляют желать лучшего. Однако погодные условия с которыми вы сталкиваетесь в России, гораздо более серьезны, по-этому я могу понять, почему существует много проблем с дорогами.

Это означает, что надо поддерживать ваше оборудование, каким бы оно ни было, машины, инструмент, неважно, и тогда это оборудование будет работать долгое время. Большинство американцев не утруждает себя беспокойством о таком обслуживании. Они предпочитают дешевый и легкий путь. Я не хочу, чтобы высмеивать этот выбор, каждый имеет право на свое мнение. Однако это не для меня. Я предпочитаю, чтобы сохранить то, что у меня есть, чтобы сохранить когда это работает и, чтобы восстановить, если сломано.Волга является гораздо более подходящим для такого подхода, на мой взгляд.

That is a difficult question. There are so many things that I do like about Russia that most of the time I don't think about the things that I don't like. I suppose there are some, but this is true of everyone everywhere on the planet. We all have things we don't like about various countries. Hell we all have things that we don't like about our own countries too. It's normal. I'd rather focus on the positive.

....Generally speaking these cars do not have a good reputation for quality in America. In fact, most Americans aren't aware that Russia has automotive manufacturing companies like Volga. A few of the people who I have told about my Volga have said "Russia makes cars? Really?" - so you can get an understanding I think from this quote. However most Americans also do not understand the harsh weather conditions that vehicles of all types are subjected to in your part of the world. Personally one of the reasons that I like my Volga is because it is rugged and capable of handling adverse weather conditions. Such conditions would cause a problem for many of the cars that you see in America these days, particularly the import cars, which seem weak to me. All of that plastic and fiberglass and BS. Nah, not for me. I am an old school guy who likes the proven, strong and reliable cars. Hell I like anything that I can rely upon. America has become a "throw away" society. By this I mean that when something begins to get old and looks like it has a little age, generally speaking people throw it away and by a new replacement. I am from the school of thought that says that you refurbish what you have and keep it in good condition. This means that you maintain your equipment, whatever it may be, a car, a tool, whatever, so that this equipment will last a long time. Most Americans cannot be bothered with such maintenance. They prefer the cheap and easy path. I don't want to ridicule this choice, everyone is entitled to their opinion. However it does not work for me. I prefer to maintain what I own, to keep it running and to repair it when it is broken. A Volga is much more suitable to this approach in my mind.

I understand your position about many things. Because i from this "school" too! Therefore i am owner Volga more then 9 ears. But even in Russia now not much people who thinking same! Increasingly people try to change their cars to more modern (imported cars). Therefore Volga is not popular car now. Like other russian cars.

Понимаю твою позицию о многих вещах. Потому, что сам из такой же "школы". Поэтому я владелец Волги больше 9 лет. Но даже в России не все думают так же. всё чаще люди стремятся сменить свои машины на более современные (импортные). Поэтому Волга - не популярная ныне машина. Как и другие русские автомобили.

Interestingly enough, when I was in Russia I told Maxim about my school of thought regarding such matters. He told me that I was "as Russian people", which meant that I was part Russian. I accepted it as a compliment.
